About Tenafly, NJ Real Estate Market

One of the oldest suburbs of New York City, Tenafly is one of the 26 boroughs in Bergen County in New Jersey that got formed during the Boroughitis phenomenon that occurred in 1894. During this phenomenon, portions of Palisades Township got included in the formation of Tenafly in 1894. Currently, around 16,000 people reside in Tenafly, which is spread over 5.16 square miles.

Tenafly shares its borders with other boroughs of Bergen County, such as Cresskill, Alpine, Englewood, Bergenfield and Englewood Cliffs. Since the beginning, Tenafly has remained one of the highest-income communities in Bergen County, due to which you can find many large-sized homes, which are some of the most desirable houses in New Jersey real estate.

During the late 17th century, many Dutch immigrants began to settle in Tenafly. The Dutch influence can be seen in the inspiration behind the borough’s name, taken from the Dutch phrase ‘Tiene Vly’ that means ‘ten swamps.

The overall planning and development in Tenafly are influenced by the hills and valleys around the town. While the eastern part of Tenafly is called ‘East Hill’ and has a higher elevation, the eastern part of the borough has dramatically higher terrains which terminate at the New Jersey Palisades beside the Hudson River.
