About Waldwick, NJ Real Estate Market

Awarded as the safest small town in America, Waldwick is a small borough in Bergen County in New Jersey state, spanning an area of over 2.07 square miles. The current population of Waldwick is around 10,000 people, with the town sharing its borders with other boroughs of Bergen County, like Ho-Ho-Kus, Allendale, Ridgewood, Midland Park, Wyckoff and Saddle River.

The history of Waldwick as a populated area began in the pre-Columbian era when the Lenape Native American tribe started living in the area, much before Bergen County real estate shaped in this area. The region was then discovered by Europeans in 1610 when a Dutch trading expedition landed in the place and created a Nieuw Amsterdam colony in 1624. Along with the north-eastern part of New Jersey, the current region of the borough also became a Dutch possession at that time.

The formation of Waldwick as a modern borough took place in 1919 when a council of citizens voted to establish the borough from some portions of Orvil Township, which was dissolved after the establishment of Waldwick as a borough. The inspiration behind the naming of the borough comes from two words in Old English – ‘wald’ (forest) and ‘wick’ (place). There are a few places in Waldwick, which are included in the National Register of Historic Places, such as Erie Railroad Signal Tower in Waldwick Yard, Albert Smith House, White Tenant House and Waldwick Railroad Station.
